What's the best way to get soft curls without using a hair iron?

A hair iron would do too much damage, and rollers just don't work. Do you use any products that get that effect? Sort of like how Kate Hudson usually wears her hair.

you could blowdry them in little ringlets around your finger. it would take forever like that, though
try rollers or curlers and put them in your hair over night
